As the UK emerges from recession with significant national debt, public sector bodies are facing the challenge of driving up productivity and quality, while simultaneously moving into a period of fiscal austerity.

  • Public sector organisations are constantly expected to reform while operating within governmental policies and guidelines. The result? Ever increasing workloads, stress, low morale and lack of resources.
  • The NHS also faces challenges such as: how can its vision for a system wide approach to talent and leadership aimed at delivering ‘the highest quality care for all’, as set out in the NHS Next Stage Review, be turned into reality? And how do you move from organisational aspirations such as world class commissioning to individual know how?

Businesses in both public and private sectors also face great pressure to remain productive in spite of current economic pressures. This requires clear and decisive leadership, yet the Ashridge Management Index 2008 found that only 36% of public sector respondents believed their organisations were doing enough to develop future leaders. Furthermore, despite great loyalty, with 88% intending to remain in the sector, OPP research found that public sector employees are more susceptible to conflict.
